Abstract
This resource pack provides adaptable workshop materials for facilitating critical discussion of ageism, ageing and cultural representation. Designed primarily for professional development with groups of approximately 10–20 participants from a range of ages, backgrounds and disciplinary or professional contexts, the materials support discussion-based sessions of between one and three hours. While the current version is particularly suited to academic and professional development settings, the approach is intended to be adaptable across educational and industry contexts.
The workshop is structured around three interconnected stages. The first introduces key themes within age-related discourse, including biology, power and visibility, encouraging participants to identify and critically examine stereotypes and assumptions surrounding ageing. The second uses a recorded play as a case study, with guided close analysis exploring how these themes are represented dramatically. The third broadens the discussion beyond the play, asking participants to identify age-related discourse within wider cultural and professional contexts, reflect on its relevance to their own fields, and consider creative and practical ways of challenging ageist stereotypes.
The pack is designed for flexible delivery. A one-hour workshop can focus on analysis of the play; a two-hour version combines case-study analysis with broader reflection; and a three-hour workshop incorporates all three stages. Additional scene-analysis activities, worksheets, a script-based exercise and an optional reading list allow facilitators to adapt or extend sessions according to the interests and needs of participants.
