Abstract
This paper examines the pig-killing scene in Jude The Obscure, paying close attention to the novel’s representation of animals, food, and food preparation. It considers how Hardy figures key characters, notably Arabella, in terms of animals and addresses the significance of characters’ attitudes to the uses and suffering of animals.
