Abstract

This paper examines the recent recommendations from a National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence guideline on physical health issues and care for individuals with schizophrenia and psychosis. A recent scoping exercise undertaken by Berkshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is reported with reference to the methodologies and tools used to illustrate the evidence-based baseline measurement of compliance on such recommendations. Discussion on the scoping findings will be followed by an exploration of the challenges facing NHS trusts as they attempt to implement the recommendations. Some relevant strategies are proposed, such as focusing on enhancing collaboration between primary and secondary services, innovative practice changes, and instituting workforce development and training initiatives.
