Abstract

This article summarises the epidemiology of cataract, the normal and altered physiology of the eye's lens, and the causes of and risk factors associated with the condition. It outlines the aims of modern cataract surgery and dsicusses the main surgical approaches. The efefcts of' cataract blindness' on the patient's quality of life are addressed, with particular reference to the negative efect of the onset of depression. The role of the nurse in promoting qulaity of life is explored with refrence to the value of psyhological theory in the care of and promotion of health to older patients with catarcats.
