Abstract
22-minute concert work for chorus and orchestra, commissioned by the Hampshire County Youth Orchestra in 2015 and performed by it with the Choir of the Liebigschule of Giessen, Germany, Winchester Cathedral (30 January 2016) and at the Stadttheater, Giessen (19 February 2016). The brief was for a work articulating a plea for peace and reflecting on the suffering of children caught up in human conflict. The text is a collation of lines in their original German by Hermann Hesse and in English by Karen Gershon (a German Jewish wartime refugee in Britain) and Vernon Scannell (a decorated war hero who suffered lasting emotional damage from his experiences). Appropriate permissions were obtained in the case of all three sources.
