Abstract

This was a site specific work organized between the community at the Museum of Water and Steam and the University of West London (London College of Music) as part of the Inside Out Festival, London, UK, 2016.

The work the audience will encounter in the performance of Pandemonium at the London Museum of Water and Steam is genuinely inspired by the machinery and the environment in which they exist. The performance ideas and the unities of action within the performance piece reflect the historical impact of a time and place when water and steam enabled a network of communications from city to city to be established and the beginnings of the industrial revolution. The students and tutors from University of West London’s London College of Music have seriously considered their roles within this event and their response to the museum has created an authentic piece of entertainment where the machinery can speak to their audience. A voice has been given to the world of the past, and in addition a genuine relationship of honesty and sensitivity to the environment in which the piece exists. The title of the piece, Pandemonium, indeed reflects the many demons released as the industrial revolution and the importance of water and steam contributed its strength and power to all aspects of our culture.
