Abstract

This is a written paper for an invited seminar held as part of 'Viola Day', Rowan University, New Jersey, USA, on the 1st of February 2025.
The seminar addresses: the main characteristics of the instrument; its ‘location’ on the score; considerations about generating musical material; and a list of selected principles about writing and arranging.
The paper draws examples from two compositions by the author: the first is called 'Low Strings Drama', a musical drama in eleven variations for viola and cello duo. The second is titled 'La Luna nel Pozzo', a composition for ten violas (US premier as part of this event).
