Paterson, Justin L. (2014) Contemporary approaches to programming drums. In: Proceedings of the 137th Audio Engineering Society Convention, 10-13 October 2014, Los Angeles, US. (Unpublished)Full text not available from this repository.
Drum programming has often faced boundaries in terms of how effectively it could address the complexities of certain genres. This tutorial will explore and push some of these boundaries as implemented in contemporary professional practice, showing contrasting techniques used in the creation of both human emulation and the unashamedly synthetic, across genres from Swing to Glitch.
The session will include numerous live demonstrations covering a range of approaches using different DAWs and bespoke software using multi-touch techniques.
Although introducing all key concepts from scratch, its range and hybridization should provide inspiration even for experienced practitioners.
