There has been a lot of research on Media Access Control (MAC) protocol developments to optimise 802.11 based wireless networks. However, most of these MAC protocols are developed only in simulation and few have been verified using hardware implementation as the cost and complexity in developing alternative MAC hardware limits the development of such wireless experimental platforms. The University of Waikato has developed an experimental wireless protocol platform called WAG and we have done some collaborative works on implementing a simplified 802.11 MAC using VHDL on the platform as the basis for a wireless MAC that incorporates location determination. The detailed design of the MAC functional blocks will be presented in this paper together with some test results and problems we met during the implementation.
