Abstract
Aims: Previous research indicates that judgements on a variety of measures (e.g., severity, trauma, responsibility, etc.) vary according to victim and perpetrator gender. Results from these studies generally find that 'typical' abuse (e.g., a man abusing a woman) garners higher ratings of severity, lower victim blame etc. However, no studies have since investigated how the type of abuse (e.g., physical vs. emotional vs. financial) further influences these judgements.
Methods: 12 independent scenarios were created varying on victim gender, perpetrator gender, and type of abuse (3 levels: Physical, Emotional/Psychological vs. Financial). At minimum, 240 undergraduate men and women will be asked a battery of questions assessing their perceptions of the event itself and the actors within, as well as their proposed actions towards those involved, and those of the justice system.
Results: Results are anticipated to replicate previous study findings, as well as provide new evidence that 'typical' abuse (physical), combined with 'typical' actors (male perpetrators, female victims) produce the most sympathetic judgements from participants.
Implications: It is anticipated that by more fully understanding the variation in judgements accompanying varying abuse configurations, education and intervention can be more effectively targeted – both for the public and specialist populations such as police officers.
