This introduction to Peter Whelan's 1981 play provides a detailed historical background to the actual Accrington Pals, most of whom were casualties on the first day of the battle of the Somme in 1916. It also discusses the play as drama and its focus on the women left behind in Accrington. It analyses the use of history as drama, dealing with both its original historical and social context and the social and political context of 1981, when Mrs Thatcher's support for 'self-help' and entrepreneurship were making their presence felt. The play is seen in the context of Peter Whelan's work, focussing on the themes and structures of his plays. The text itself is annotated.
