The development of students' employability skills is high on the agenda of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). This paper investigates the current issues regarding employability of students. It identifies, categorises and ranks employability skills in health and social care from the perspective of key stakeholders. The objectives are: to identify employability skills as perceived by the stakeholders, to explore elements of employability in the current curriculum and to identify best practice in developing skills within the workplace.
This paper is comprised of two phases: Phase 1 involves a scoping review of literature to explore the characteristics which are associated with employability as perceived by the stakeholders and their engagement in the development of graduates' employability skills in full partnership. An overview of the type, extent and quantity of research available on employability skills is essential in order to identify potential research gaps to design the phase two of the study.
Phase 2: An exploratory qualitative study is in progress and this will involve ethics approval, data collection, analysis and interpretation of the study findings. A Delphi technique will be used to obtain information from stakeholders comprising of students, academics, employers and service users. 40 participants - 10 each of students, academics, employers and (healthcare) service users will be surveyed. Responses will be analysed using a narrative synthesis to identify perceived key attributes of employability. Recommendations will be made based on results. The conclusion will be based on the analysis of the results of evidence based information.
