The aim of this paper was to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the process of qualitative content analysis. For this purpose, 3 transcripts of interviews with year 7 children were reviewed and then prepared for analysis through coding. To infer the credibility of the codes; the categories identified were compared to a second and third coder.
The strength of the method is that it is well suited in the multifaceted educational research environment where often a qualitative approach generates much richer data then a quantitative approach, particularly for topics which include young students’ experiences and views. A weakness is the interpretation and possible subjectivity of the researcher – although this is often argued to be the case in any qualitative methodology. Care must be taken with formulating research questions – they should not be too extensive. Too make full use of multi-coding; some rules or agreement as to how to approach the analysis should be formed before commencing the exercise and software programmes can eliminate unnecessary subjected and human errors.
