Abstract

I am going to use this paper to discuss the way that Keil's idea of 'groovology' (Keil 1987; Keil and Feld 1994) fits with contemporary work on expressive microtiming and performance practice and how these ideas have influenced my own research. As the somewhat fragmented nature of this position paper may make plain, these ideas are still leading me in a direction rather than having led me to any strong conclusions. At present I am working on a study of Marvin Gaye's 'What's Going On' which will attempt to describe perceived social characteristics of the different instrumentalists in relation to the micro-structure of the component parts.
