Abstract

Population ageing is one of the most significant demographic transformations of the 21st century, driven by declining fertility, increased life expectancy, and changing migration patterns. As the proportion of older adults continues to rise worldwide, societies face growing challenges related to chronic diseases, disability, dementia, multimorbidity, and increasing healthcare and long-term care demands. This presentation examines the global ageing phenomenon and its implications for public health. It highlights the critical role of regular physical exercise in promoting healthy ageing by improving physical function, mental well-being, independence, and longevity. Endurance, strength, flexibility, and balance exercises are emphasized as effective strategies for reducing disease burden and enhancing quality of life among older adults. The presentation concludes that promoting physical activity is a cost-effective and essential public health intervention for supporting healthy and active ageing in increasingly older societies.
