Abstract

The presentation focused on the current situation of older adults living in a rural area of Bangladesh. The study was conducted in a carefully selected community where a local non-governmental organisation, Young Power in Social Action (YPSA) Bangladesh, has been implementing a range of social development programmes since 1985. More recently, YPSA introduced a dedicated initiative aimed at raising awareness and improving the wellbeing of older adults, which has been operating for approximately five years. The project seeks to promote healthy ageing by enhancing health awareness, encouraging social participation, and supporting the active engagement of older people in community life. Through various community-based activities, the programme aims to address social isolation, strengthen social networks, and empower older adults to play a more active role in decision-making processes within their communities. As part of the study, baseline data were collected and analysed to assess the demographic characteristics, health status, social participation, and overall wellbeing of older adults in the intervention area. The analysis provides valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities associated with ageing in rural Bangladesh. Preliminary findings from the study, including key trends and emerging issues, were shared with the audience during the seminar and served as a basis for discussion on strategies to support healthy and active ageing in low-resource rural settings.
