Abstract

This study is about Japanese women's experiences of breastfeeding in the current Japanese social context.
The research was based on a Japanese way of knowing 'ZEN-JIN-TEKI"; the way of understanding a phenomenon as a whole. Adapting the principles of an emergent design in naturalistic enquiry, the research was undertaken in order to explore the nature of the topic in the field, and to develop an analytical framework that could be used for qualitative data collected in Japanese language. Three women were interviewed at 3-4 months in the postnatal period, and their emotions were identified as key to understanding breastfeeding from a woman's point of view.
