Abstract

Since the 1970s attitudes towards childbirth have been changing as a results of women's and midwives' desire for a more natural approach. This thesis assesses the appropriateness of midwifery as a model for maternity care and explores the differences between models of midwifery and their relationship to the birth experiences of women and babies. The Alberta model provided the main focus to the exploration.
