Abstract
This chapter focuses on world tourism cities, which are important destinations that lately have received an increased attention from scholars. It specifically examines the current trends that are shaping tourism cities and the challenges faced by these environments.
The chapter first discusses the rapid growth of urbanisation, with an emphasis on its effects on communities. Urbanisation is seen to be one of the mega-trends that the global society is experiencing at present. The increased level of urbanisation that was seen over the past decade in many countries has contributed to the growth of the urban tourism phenomenon, which was one of the fastest growing types of tourism before the COVID-19 pandemic. The implications of the pandemic on world tourism cities are briefly touched upon, with emphasis on the major tourism crisis that many urban destinations have been or are still going through.
Other trends and challenges covered in this chapter include the sustainability debates and how these affect tourism cities worldwide; the climate change debates; the quality of life of citizens and how tourism can have a beneficial or detrimental effect on their daily lives; the progress of ICTs and the impact on tourism cities, with a focus on smart tourism solutions adopted by tourism cities.
