Abstract

This article examines the development of religious tourism and the role of pilgrimage routes therein. Examples of various routes are included together with the advantages of religious routes and trails to tourist destinations. It will be shown that routes such as the St James Way provide a number of sustainable benefits to the regions in which they are located.
