Abstract
This chapter delves into the critical aspects of water infrastructure (WI)—a combination of structures, reservoirs, networks, hydromechanical elements, etc., that constantly work toward controlling, collecting, treating, and distributing water. The primary challenges and concerns associated with WI are aimed to be explored in this study, to increase the current knowledge and understanding of the potential role of WI in the context of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations (UN). Aging, climate change impacts, population growth, and urbanization effects are uncovered in this chapter as the predominant stressors that are threatening WI components. It can be reported that the aging of WI, as a common problem of almost all current infrastructures, can increase failure risk. Climate change, through increasing temperature and changing precipitation patterns, can jeopardize WI and incur more costs. Population growth and urbanization, on the other hand, may worsen the condition by increasing demands (water and agricultural products), changing population distributions and land-use, and land-cover patterns. Reaching water and climate-related targets of the SDGs is another challenge that WI is facing these days, which is unveiled in this chapter.
